Robert Harling traces the story of Gill’s career—from his early days as a cutter of tombstones and memorials to his emergence as a type designer

With original engravings and woodcuts (and stamps) this is a touching tribute to someone who had a profound influence on books (in general) and printing (in New England)

Toshi Katayama’s work and approach to teaching was so highly regarded in Japan that it was the focus of an exhibition at the Ginza Graphic Gallery in Tokyo in 1994

[a lowercase i cut by Philip Surey] WADitems 21 × 33 mmWhat a pleasure are hand cut letters. This one was cut by Philip Surey, a 1996 graduate of the City & Guilds of London Art School who later assisted Richard Kindersley and Ralph Beyer in their shops before going out on own as a sculptor and letter carver. (We keep an alphabet carved by Phil above our desk.) This piece was carved as a workshop sample and its a total beauty. A lovely thing that he signed by carving his last name on the back.
