At the age of 11, Tillander relocated to St. Petersburg to study as a barber's apprentice. However, Tillander soon transitioned to serving as an apprentice under Fredrik Adolf Holstenius, a Finnish goldsmith. By 1860, Tillander obtained his own workshop, and officially went into business with his son, Alexander, in 1891. Together, the father and son duo grew in popularity,
