Its hard to "get inside" the stone with a loupe but you can just make out the characteristics of a lab sapphire - its still a sapphire and its still antique (synthetic sapphires and rubies have been around since the 19th century) and the diamonds are 100% natural earth mined stones (and very nice too)

John Stevens work is in the British museum's archive although little is known about him from what we can find out. We have seen and sold a lot of pique work pieces (the Victorians didn't have so many materials to work with so they turned to nature, unluckily for the turtle who's shell was moulded and inlaid with gold and silver) this is the only one we've seen set with a gem. And it is a beautiful, silky
