1981年、私は34歳で、ライト・ワークのディレクター、ジェフリー・フーンの招きに応じて 1か月間シラキュースに滞在することになった。ライト・ワークのアーティスト・イン・レジデンス は、写真家に撮影・現像・プリントのいずれも自由にさせてくれるというものだったが、私は現像や プリントがあまり得意ではなかったから、ひたすら撮影に集中した。自分にとって初めての場所で 何の妨げもなく撮影する機会に恵まれて、この滞在は私のキャリアのなかでも、きわめて楽しく重要な ひとときだった。
