Daarnaast was het met name een gebruiksvoorwerp. Ook politici droegen ze als status van hun ambt, en met de pugio is Julius Caesar ook vermoord. De pugio's hadden een breed, bladvormig blad met een middenrib. Latere pugio's waren smaller en hadden een kleinere middenrib.
